With the arrival of the third child and the new reality of the father working full time at home, their current interior not longer met their needs and a redesign was needed. There were no obvious solutions. In close collaboration with the customer, I identified the best place to put the baby's room and the new office.

The client had a minimalist style, using light and dark colors, straight lines and few accessories.

The existing decor with light wood floors, black furniture, white walls and a single blue wall, was a good base to start from. However, it lacked warmth and coziness.

To create this I used rugs and curtains with soft fabrics and added a neutral but warmer colour to break the strong contrast between white, black and blue (cold colours).

In addition, rounded forms were introduced to brake the straight lines and create a more lively space.

Layout

After deciding that the baby's room would be on the upper floor, where the couple's home office was currently located, it was time to rearrange the living room.

The downstairs space was large but the main question was how to make optimal use of it accommodating all the required functions (living, dining, working, playing, storage). There was an "empty" area in the middle of the floor plan that the residents wanted to keep..

Using 2D projections and 3D visualizations of different layouts we arrived at two good options. The living room was modified to include storage, a space for children to play and a sofa that could be used to watch TV but also to entertain guests. The office was placed where formerly the dining room was. To create privacy from the living room, a folding wooden door was used which has both an acoustic and visual function.
